On more than 300m of altitude, on the so-called Cerro del Castillo, and orientated to the Cadiz bay, Medina Sidonia is the “Balcony to the Bay”, delight for several cultures and people throughout its three thousand years of history.

It was declared “Historic and Artistic Collection and Award to the Embellishment of the Andalusian Villages”. Its foundation is attributed to the Phoenician from Sidón, from which it took its name; Medina was also a Roman colony of great importance and capital of province at the Visigothic time. Among its several monuments, it must be highlighted the Archaeological Roman Set (Roman crypto-porticos on which the present city rests), the Visigothic Chapel, The Town Council (s. VII), the Market (s. XIX), its churches and convents, such as the Iglesia Mayor of Gothic-Renaissance style and the Monastery of San José del Cuervo, the Walls and Doors of the Moslem City, the ruins of the Castle and the Old City, and the Castle of Torrestrella, among many other scattered all through its territory. It is considered as one of the most beautiful villages of Spain, Medina Sidonia is also a paradise for relax, where you can escape from world and enter into a full contact with nature, between the countryside of Cadiz and the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales.

 

Among other traditional aspects, such as its diverse and valued crafts, it must be also mentioned its rich gastronomy and its especially famous cakes and pastries with handmade products of very first quality, represented by its inimitable dessert: El Alfajor. Not for nothing Medina Sidonia was the pastry capital of the Arabic world.
