September 15th -- Keep the C2 feedbacks flowing. Thank to user reports, we have fixed most if not all of the bugs within C2 on its first day of introduction. We are currently putting the final touches on several supporting features that will complete our C2 community roll-out.

Staff list within existing C2 communities have been cleared to fix a flaw. Staff additions will now require email activation.
September 14th -- We are rolling out a new feature titled "C2". C2 is a powerful tool designed to give pro-active members the ability to create and manage story driven communities within FanFiction.Net. Login for details.

We are looking for ways to pierce C2's complexity, make it accessible and more intuitive to all users. Send your suggestion or feedback reports to info@fanfiction.net.

September 9th -- A "hide bio" option has been added to the top-right corner of each author profile to assist readers in skipping long commentaries: change will take 24 hours to take effect.

We encourage all writers to control their bio length as such it does not require a casual reader to use the scroll bar to locate the list of stories. It is in the best interest of every writer to showcase their stories and not have them hidden beneath an overly long self-description.

September 8th -- Document Manager has been updated to address the following issues:
  1. Centered text in MS Word generated HTML files would show up as left aligned in some cases.
  2. Accented characters, often used in non-english text, would get chopped off in rare cases.
  3. QuickEdit centering did not work under some Mozilla/Netscape browsers.
September 6th -- Author profile links have changed. Please update your links to FanFiction.Net accordingly. The old "/profile.php" style links will be disabled in one week and if you are not sure which link to use, visit "Login >> Custom URL".

September 5th -- The bug outlined in the 9/3 announcement has been squashed. A big thanks to everyone that submitted a feedback/bug report.

September 3rd -- We have been made aware of a bug in the login area: for some uers the browser would stall or a blank page is displayed after visiting the "click here to continue" link following a successful login. Please note the display of "click here to continue" is not the bug but a completedly blank screen or browser stall after clicking this link is.

If you have been effected by this error please email info@fanfiction.net with the following information:
  1. Operating System: MS XP, MS 2000, MS 98, MS ME, OS X, OS 9, Linux, etc.
  2. Browser Type: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.
  3. Browser Version: IE: "Help >> About Internet Explorer", Netscape/Mozilla: "Help >> About Mozilla"
  4. Please include any other meaningful information you have regarding this problem.
August 26th -- Document Manger/QuickEdit has been updated to fix a recent bug which clumped paragraphs together.

FanFiction.Net email accounts, for support service members, have been upgraded with enterprise level spam and virus protection.

August 24th -- FanFiction.Net is introducing a new support area with knowledgebase/faq section to better assist members. WordPerfect document support has also been improved

August 18th -- Maintenance session earmarked for today has been delayed to Monday, August 23rd. We will take this time to increase server capacity, improve WordPerfect support, and introduce a new help portal so we can promptly track/resolve valid support requests.

August 12th -- There will be an extended service window spanning August 17th & 18th at which time FanFiction.Net staff will perform extensive upgrades to improve site performance and stability. During the service period website access will be limited to read only: login and reviewing will be disabled.

August 8th -- Our primary server suffered hardware failure yesterday resulting in disrupted service to the login area. Document manager and other login related services are currently functional though not very stable. We are currently awaiting shipments of replacement parts and should have everything fixed by week's end.

August 6th -- Document Manager will now preserve supported text styles for all file formats except plain text (.txt). The following styles will be preserved: bold, italicized, underlined, and centered text.

WordPerfect support has been removed until a crashing problem is resolved.

August 5th -- FanFiction.Net will no longer support paragraph indentations. Over the past year we have supported a half-working method of preserving the indentations within submitted documents. However, our indent setup only worked part of the time and worse, is becoming a nightmare to support.

Instead of allocating ever more time to fix the growing problems related to indentation, we have decided to remove this feature. If you have previously relied on indentations alone without double spacing, please double space all paragraph and distinct story structures to show clear separation.

August 3rd -- FanFiction.Net will now accept submissions from the following file formats:
  1. Microsoft Word (.doc)
  2. WinWord, WordPad (.rtf)
  3. Plain Text, NotePad (.txt)
  4. HTML (.htm, .html)
  5. StarOffice (.sdw)
  6. OpenOffice (.sxw)
Please test the upgrade and send all bug reports to bugs@fanfiction.net

July 27th -- FanFiction.Net Content Guidelines have been updated to reduce the apparent confusion of two rules:
  1. Chat and script format are the same. We have not allowed chat/script format for years.
  2. Choose your adventure and second person/you based are interactive entries. We do not accept interactive stories.
July 16th -- Story display pages are now using a new shorter url format. Please update the urls on your personal web sites to the new style as soon as possible. The old "/read.php" urls will be disabled in 2 weeks. The new url format is a requirement for the feature announced yesterday.

July 15th -- Over the past 48 hours we have been testing a new system that will allow almost real-time content updating. Due to the resource intensive process of updating the site whenever anyone makes a change, we have taken the path to cache, the process of storing a recently generated page for an extended period of time, story displays and not update for many hours.

Caching allows FanFiction.Net to operate at maximum efficiency but storing stories for too long can create havoc where readers can be viewing out-dated entries and writers not aware when a modified entry will be updated on the site. The best example of this delay is when a new chapter is submitted to an existing entry. Under the old system, readers might not see the new chapter for several hours.

Our new approach allow critical updates of stories to be reflected within 15 seconds. Please note this feature is only active to select story activities on the story display pages: adding chapter, replacing chapter content, chapter removal, and story removal. In addition, some users might need to hit the browser "refresh" button to see the changes.

Please submit detailed bug reports to bugs@fanfiction.net.

July 8th -- We were successful in getting everything back online and are currently tweaking the site so that it will gracefully change into read-only mode if our main database server goes down in the future. A side-effect of yesterday's problems is that some submissions were not correctly registered.

If you have submitted a story to FanFiction.Net anytime yesterday, July 7th, please login and visit each story and use the stats or edit/modify chapters feature to make sure each story has at least one chapter. If not, please remove the story and resubmit the entry.

July 7th -- We are experiencing difficulties at this moment due to corruption of our primary database. Site will operate in read-only mode until a solution can be found. Thank you for your patience as we hope to get everything back online by 11PM PST.

June 22nd, 2004 -- Please note that FanFiction.Net has a zero tolerance policy against mis-rating of stories. Accounts will be closed upon abuse confirmation.

Abuse reports are submitted by readers and writers of FanFiction.Net which are then reviewed and confirmed by administrative staff. When abuse of site guidelines has been confirmed, the staff will take necessary action.

We encourage everyone to assist in the care of this community by reporting entries when warranted. Those that have no respect for our policies cannot escape the watchful eyes of their peers.

June 18th, 2004 -- Persistent login, a heavily lobbied feature, is now available. Similar to most "remember me" type logins, the new option will keep a user logged in for 3 days. Due to the nature of this feature, please always use the log out function and avoid using this at public terminals.

Due to the increasing occurrences of spim, instant message spam, and the many different IM providers on the net, FanFiction.Net has decided to remove the posting of IM information on user profiles. If you wish to offer this information to the public, you can still do so via the bio/profile section.

Signed reviewers will now notice a new "recommend this story" option in the review window. This is a highly experimental feature as we will only be gathering statistic to help us understand whether such data is helpful in the long run. Despite the fact this feature is still in alpha stage, we encourage all signed reviewers to fill out the forms in a consistent and honest manner.
