Alcántara is a historic-artistic place (B.O.E. 7-5-98) , filled with old building which are perfectly preserved: the Roman Bridge, the Roman temple of San julián, the convent of San Benito, the church of Santa María de Almocovar, the sinagogue, etc.
The Roman Bridge
| It was built by the architect Cayo Julio Lácer, in the time of Trajano. It was finished in AD 10. In the middle of bridge there is an arch called the Arch of the Triumph. This is the only bridge which has this construction because we can find several commemorative tablets of its restoration with the heraldry of Carlos V e Isabel II. |
The Convent of San Benito
| This Convent was the main hause of the military order of Alcántara. Nowadays it is the famous stage of the "Spanish Classic Theatre of Alcántara", which is celebrated the first week of August. There we can see plays whose main actors and actresses are very famous: Juanjo Menendez, Maribel Verdú, Fernando Guillen, Adolfo Marsillach, Rafael Alvarez "El Brujo" etc. |
| San Pedro de Alcántara, was born in this beautiful village and he lived here until he decided to be friar of the Franciscan Order and he devoted to improve and reform, this, Order all his life. He was an inseparable friend of Santa Teresa de Jesús. His given name was Juan Garabito de Sanabria. |
