Cal Maginet is a splendid old house in the very centre of the charming medieval part
of Vilaverd, in the heart of Catalonia.
This small village, surrounded by the mountains of Prades and next to the Francoli river, still keeps it's ancient structure: a twisting and narrow lane with plenty of interesting nooks and crannies.
This part of the village was built between the XII and XV th century and the house itself is documented
from 1605.
The coat of arms of the Batlle family, one of the most important of the county, decorate the ceiling of the main rooms.
History accompanies us everywhere throughout the house.
On the ground floor there are, perfectly preserved, nine stone arches in the civil gothic style characteristic of the period,
and what it was a public washing place.
There are also clear remains of an olive oil press and grindstone along with storage areas carved
out of the rock.
The cellar contains three tanks lined with tiles one of which is circular, sits underground and,
with 4.2 m of diameter and 4.2 of depth, it might hold up to 50,000 litres.
The stairwell is decorated in the style of XIX th century with a domed skylight giving this area
a warm and light feeling which permeates the whole house.
Other features including original earth tiles and wooden beams just add to the character of the place.
