#alif maddah ألف مدة

The 'alif maddah is an alif with a special sign above, called maddah مدة ("lengthening"):

'alif maddah

This stands for #aa آ, namely, for a consonant sound hamzah (# ء) followed by a long vowel (aa ا).

As for instance, the word qur#aan قرآن:

is pronounced qoor + #aan آن (never qoo + raan).

If we take away the maddah مدة sign, the same letters قران read qiraan قران, a different word with a different meaning.

Almost all instances of #aa آ are written this way (there are a few exceptions we'll see later).
