faa# فاء

This is an F.

Writing the faa# فاء

First draw a faa# فاء head (see below), then a baa# باء tail (two or three squares long), and place one dot above the hekad.

Please note: a faa# فاء and a qaaf قاف have different tails. A ف's tail is like a baa# باء's and lies on the baseline, but a ق's is like a nuwn نون's and hangs below it.

the faa# فاء 's Head

To draw the head of the faa# فاء, first draw a horizontal stroke forward, then go right upward, then draw a curved stroke which begins down to the right and ends right downward. The hole must show clearly (the hole in the figure is too small and barely acceptable).

the faa# فاء 's Loop

loopless faa' Some people say that when a faa# فاء follows a joining letter, the joining should be done like this, lifting the pen from the paper and drawing the head as explained above. But that's just the folks that think typed letters are always prettier than anybody's handwriting. In fact, in handwriting, the letter becomes a loop: that's prettier and easier.

This figure shows three faa# فاء loops: the ones with one dot above is a faa# فاء, the other is a ق. The word is qafqafah قفقفة, "shivering".

This loop shouldn't be confused with the X (D. L.) , which is broader.

To draw the loop, first make a pencil mark like this,

then draw a little arc this way,

take the marker, draw whatever letter comes before the loop, and climb the side of the square. Stop at the top of the pencil arc. Then step over the other half of the arc going towards the southeast, and turn to the left:

Draw the letters after the loop (or the tail if a faa# فاء was the last letter), and then add the dot.

A good loop is narrower than its height, but its hole must still be visible. If it were broader it'd look like an ugly X, and that, with the dot on top, looks like a غ.

A faa# فاء which looks like an upright egg is perfectly readable. It just looks cooler when the upgoing and downgoing strokes are somewhat asymmetrycal, as seen in the figures above.
