![]() | This letter is an N. Arabs call it nuwn نون (noon). It always carries one dot above. |
![]() | The nuwn نون, when followed by any letter, becomes a single tooth. It still carries the dot. |
The figure shows a nuwn نون with a horizontal stroke which joins it to a following haa# هاء. These letters nh نه might be part of the word qarnuhuw قرنهو "his horn", or of bi#u(dh)nihiy بأذنه "with his ear".
First, draw a nuwn نون head,
then a nuwn نون tail,
and top it with a fresh dot. You may place the dot
atop the head, or slightly to the left.
Some folks drop the dot inside the bowl, but
don't do that: it looks kinda sissy.
When the nuwn نون is a tooth, draw
first the tooth, then all the letters
after it up to the end of the word,
then add all the dots, beginning by the
rightmost one. That's exactly what we said
about the
baa# باء, just that the dot is now on top of the tooth, not below.
And never forget that a final nuwn نون
hangs from the baseline, while a tooth nuwn نون sits on it.
