the #alif ألف Stroke

The letter #alif ألف is a vertical stroke, two squares high, sitting on the baseline.

Though you might perhaps tell children that an English uppercase "I" is a vertical line, that's only true of printed type. In most adults' handwriting, all vertical lines lean a bit forward. Same with Arabic script: all nominally vertical lines, long or short, lean a bit forward —just remember that "forward" means towards the left.
