raa# راء

The Arabic r is pronounced as in Spanish, with a single tap against the ridge behind the teeth. An American r won't do. If you have trouble with this sound, think of the ultra-British pronunciation veddy for very. It's the same sound.

The ر is a dark letter. This is why the u of #arruzz الرز or #alqur#aan القرآن is more like an OE than like an OO.

Writing the raa# راء

A raa# راء is just a raa# راءs tail.

Don't Confuse raa# راء with daal دال

For a person used to use our alphabet, the letters D د, L ل and R ر all look like a backwards L at first sight, and differ only in small details like position, size, curvature... so you'll probably mistake one for the other at first. That's why I told you to use grid-paper while you're learning.

The L ل is the biggest of the three. In this website it is very easiest to tell: it is three squares high and has a deep big tail. The ells you'll write on gridless paper won't be so easy to tell apart from the dees د at first, because an ell looks like an ell whatever size you write it. So be careful to lean your Ds, to make your Ls tall, and to keep your Rs round (pun not intended).

radda The D د is a wedge sitting flatly on the baseline, and the R ر is an eyelash hanging from it. The figure shows the letters rd رد (which BTW might be read radda- رد, "he gave back").
