YIN AND YANG
|
Ideally everyone and everything should be in a state of balance. Then things occur smoothly. When the energies are out of synchronicity then problems start and troubles occur. Yin and yang are primordial forces that possess completely opposing attributes. However each one gives existence to the other. Without yin there is no yang, and vice versa. Yin and yang continually interact, creating change. Summer which is yang gives way to winter which is yin, which then becomes summer again. Darkness becomes light, light becomes darkness. It is important to understand that neither is good or bad. One must be seen in relation to the other. Harmony in one's surroundings in one's eating habits produces peace, brings happiness prosperity and good health. It is the art of balancing the forces of heaven and earth. It is the art of maintaining or unblocking the energies that flow through our bodies and surroundings. It
is the desire to acknowledge the power of the natural world and to live
in harmony with it. By clashing with the natural order, the Tao, you
disturb the balance of yin and yang within yourself, the two fundamental
forces of the universe. (Tái chi'tú Shou, Sources of Chinese tradition, edited by Theodore de Bary)
The dynamic interaction between these two forces creates and sustains all life. Yin is feminine, cool and watery, the force in the moon, air and water. Yang is masculine heavy and hot. The force in the earth and the sun, in thunder and in fire. Yin and yang exist in everything in different proportions that are continually changing. Our nature and health reflect the movement of yin and yang within us. Healthy human beings intuitively think and act in terms of yin and yang. We can realize our dreams when we understand these two basic principles of the universe. We can turn sickness into health, misery into happiness and chaos into order. If we learn about the art of cooking and the art of eating this can be the first step towards the accomplishment of this goal. What we eat makes our blood and our cells; our blood nourishes our brain and therefore our thinking process and influences our capacity to think clearly, and acquire emotional balance. We are at the same time influenced in feeling more peaceful and happy.
