Help of Denia & District

HELP is a volunteer group providing support in emergencies such as accidents, etc. when medical services are involved. There are hospital visiting teams and an interpretation service at the Denia Hospital.

There is also medical equipment available for loan.

HOW HELP WORKS

  1. Persons of all nationalities are invited to enrol as Volunteers.
  2. All Volunteers do what they can in emergencies, but are assured of additional assistance from other volunteers when required, especially those within their own district.
  3. An Executive Committee will meet periodically to review the activities and possible expansion of HELP, and to account for the funds received and disbursed.
  4. The personal services of HELP Volunteers are free. However, persons helped are expected to meet Volunteers' out-of-pocket expenses (transportation costs, telephone calls, etc.)
  5. Meetings of all Volunteers will be held periodically to liaise with the Committee, and to co-ordinate and update information.

WHAT HELP DOES

  1. Provides neighbourly assistance to all nationalities in cases of medical or other emergencies in Denia and adjacent communities.
  2. Calls in Spanish medical practitioners when necessary.
  3. Informs Red Cross and/or the Guardia Civil in the event of an accident requiring an ambulance.
  4. Provides for the translation of medical and other emergency needs of non-Spanish speaking persons.
  5. Offers short and long distance transport-term help to people in need, including the loan of basic medical, sick-room and home nursing equipment.
  6. Provides cars with drivers for transporting patients to and from medical facilities.
  7. Provides bed-sitters for the ill.
  8. Provides shoppers for the housebound.
  9. Maintains good relations with the Red Cross, local Medical Services, and official organisations in Denia and district for the mutual benefit of the community.
  10. From moneys donated, both by individuals and organisations, HELP donates equipment to the Marina Alta Hospital, Denia, both for the Children's Ward and the General Wards, including specialised beds and mattresses and other equipment for long term bed or seriously ill patients both in hospital and out in the community. Help also donates specialised equipment to Community Health Centres in the Denia & District area, for use both in the Centres and out in the Community as decided by the Health Centre Social Service Officers.

WHAT HELP DOES NOT DO:

  1. HELP is not intended to provide continuing practical assistance to the chronically ill over extended periods.
  2. HELP does not advise on legal, financial or property matters
  3. HELP does not provide money to cover medical aid or other types of emergency requirements.

ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED TO REGARD ANY INFORMATION GIVEN AS CONFIDENTIAL

Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon 'HELP of Denia' have volunteers who visit English-speaking patients in the Marina Alta Hospital.

They are there to give help and assistance in circumstances such as:

  • if there is a communication problem with the staff (although it must be remembered that these volunteers are NOT interpreters)
  • if a patient has been admitted as an emergency and they need to contact a relative or friend
  • if a patient has forgotten to bring some item to the hospital
  • if they wish to buy a newspaper or magazine
  • or if a patient just wants to speak English to someone.

These Volunteers are there to help you.

BRITISH CONSULATE

The address of the Consul of the United Kingdom is:

Plaza Calvo Sotelo 1-5
Aptdo. de Correos 564
03001 Alicante

Tel. 96-521-6022
and 96-521-6190

The major part of the Consulate's work relates to accidents, deaths, arrests, and the imprisonment of British tourists, missing persons, emergency passports, and provision of financial advice and assistance to tourists who have had money and/or credit cards stolen.
The main service for residents is the acceptance of standard passport applications and renewals.
They will send a form for you to fill in and either return it to them or directly by post to Madrid.

In the matter of care in the community, the Consulate can help:
(i) by contacting families in the UK to see if they can help with care costs.
(ii) by liaising with UK local authorities who may be able to accept a returning resident for care
(iii) by seeking top-up funds from UK charities for residential or domiciliary care.
(iv) by liaising with Spanish local services and local British welfare groups.
Opening hours to the public are 0800 to 1400 Monday to Thursday - Fridays only until 1330.

There is an Hon. Consular Agent in Denia (Mark Petrie, Ramón y Cajal 8 baja, tel. 96-578-1815)
Mark Petrie also has an office in Javea - Marina Española 24, Tel. 96-579-3712

You are reminded, however, that Hon. Consuls have their own independent professions, and do not represent 'branches' of the Consulate in Alicante. All enquiries on consular matters should continue to be directed to the Consulate.

Give Consideration to the following points and if you think it worthwhile, implement them. You may be saved a lot of hassle.

At Home

Don't only leave a spare house key with your neighbour. Your neighbour may be out or on holiday when you need your spare key. Bury a spare key in a sealed jar in the garden. Don't leave it under a flowerpot!

Don't lock the bathroom door when there are just two of you in the house, in an emergency it takes time to force the door. Wasted minutes count. Also for the same reason don't bolt the front door of your house when you are inside it alone, Lock it.

Follow the ICE procedure

If you go to your friendly chemist you can ask for an ICE container - 'In Case of Emergency'. This is a container in which you put your details of vital information, drugs, next of kin, allergies, etc. The container is put in your fridge and a small sticker is put on your window or front door. The emergency services are on the lookout for the sticker and can then retrieve it quickly. Make copies of all important documents and store them apart from the originals. If you can spare the time get the most important copies certified.

When friends come to stay get the names and telephone or other contact details of their next of kin.

Communications

Prepare a Facts (Doomsday) Book. In it record details such as insurance and assurance policies, copies of birth and marriage certificates, details of bank accounts held, premium bonds, details of your UK and Spanish accountants and solicitors, the whereabouts of your UK and Spanish wills.

Master the mobile phone. Your landline may fail at a critical time. Put the emergency services telephone numbers on your mobile phones. Police, Ambulance, etc. Also consider putting in those numbers that you have difficulty in remembering, your NIE number, your car number, and so on, but don't put your credit card numbers on the phone.

Avoid putting any message on your landline or mobile phone that gives information on your whereabouts such as "Sorry we are not at home"

Nowadays accessing the internet is easy, worldwide. When travelling consider putting important information that you may need as an attachment in an e-mail to yourself. Include such details as passport numbers, NIE number, details of who to inform if your credit card is lost or stolen. Also include details of medication information, names of medication and doseage, details of travel insurance policy numbers and emergency contact details.

Think about any numbers you may have to quote in an emergency, your address, doctor, health insurance, SIP number, ambulance, your telephone number, etc. Write the numbers out in large letters on a sheet of paper and underneath write them in Spanish. You may not have your reading glasses handy when you need them. Make sure that you can rapidly and easily access the list. No matter how good your Spanish, it may fail you if you are in a stressful situation.

Out and about

If you or your partner go into hospital, both of you will probably be involved, one as patient and one as carer. Make sure that arrangements are made for someone to look after pets.

If you are caring for someone, consider who will look after them if you are incapacited. Possibly, for them, a short stay residential home may be the answer. Visit and select the most suitable whilst you can.

Organise and keep all medical information in one handy file. The A4 size clear plastic document wallets are ideal. Keep an up to date record of any medication being taken and details of any allergic reactions e.g. sticking plaster and penicillin.

Buy in enough tinned and packet food to last you a week in case you don't feel up to going out shopping.

Ladies, Don't keep your house keys in your handbag.

If you drive and your partner has a valid UK or Spanish licence. Encourage your partner to drive regularly, after ensuring that you are both insured to drive the appropriate vehicle. Mobility may be very important if one of you, (the only driver), becomes incapacitated.

Maintain good relationships with your nearby neighbours, you may well be in need of their assistance or be able to give them assistance in times of need.

When you are travelling remember to split your medication between your carry on luggage and that which you leave in the hold.
