Autumn Newsletter 2007

FROM THE CHAIR:

First of all, thanks to all the kind friends and HELP volunteers who have phoned me with their good wishes, following my further two stays in hospital in the last few weeks. I am also very grateful to those who visited me, in some cases bringing casseroles, cakes, chocolates etc and even cooking and shopping for me. I am lucky to have such friends.
However I did manage to visit the Xmas Fayre – and how lovely it looked. Pat French and the stall holders had worked so hard, it was a credit to all the helpers and Pat in particular. It was good to see Father Xmas who gets fatter each year! 2000 euros was the final figure made.
The volunteers’ meeting was a great success as well, with over 70 volunteers in attendance. You will all by now have received the minutes so will not repeat them, only to say we were very sorry to lose ‘our Evie’ on 21 October. She was working in the shop up until 3 weeks before she died. She would have been 100 years old in January and I know she was looking forward to celebrating her century. Also since the last newsletter Anne Martin, my secretary of 10 years back when I first took over the Chair, and Alex Williams, a very hardworking volunteer of many years standing, have both passed away.
To finish on a different note, the shop is going from strength to strength, it is amazing how it has grown in the past two and a half years. We have also been able to help so many people and certainly have made our mark in the area – and everyone we speak to seems to know the shop and the help we give in the hospital.
I think that is all for now except to wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas, and for the unfortunate people in Els Poblets, Calpe and other areas who suffered so much with the floods we send you a special wish for a Happier New Year. Mavis

HELP CHARITY BAZAAR RAISES 2000 EUROS

A crowd of people came through the doors to HELP of Denia‘s annual bazaar at the Casa Holanda on Saturday (17th November). As usual two of the most popular stalls were home made cakes and scones, which raised over 400 euros between them ( they looked so delicious it’s doubtful they will be saved for Xmas!). The tombola and raffle also raised over 550 euros between them.

Altogether a grand total of 2000 euros was taken, thanks to the efforts of volunteer stall holders and customers alike.

A big thank you to everyone!

DANCING FOR CHARITY – GET IN LINE!

By the time you read this the Stetson hats will have been dusted off, along with the ‘country style’ dress, and a number of line dancing groups from across the area will have danced up a storm in aid of HELP of Denia on Saturday 1st December, at Restaurante El Bolero, Playa la Fossa, Levante, in Calpe.

So if you missed it and want to join a line dancing group, ring Elaine on 96 649 7802 or Barbara on 630 113 649 for more information.

If you live in Calpe you can join our group in the Calpe area. We need interpreters and/or drivers to take people to health appointments. Just out of hospital or become ill? Ask about support & equipment available from Sue, our HELP representative in Calpe, on 616237135, or email her on helpofdenia.calpearea@yahoo.co.uk.

RENEWAL OF DNI CARDS

(or rather the exchange of the card for a ‘letter’)

It was mentioned in the last Newsletter about a new office opening in Denia.

It has indeed now opened (on 20th November) and the hours are 9 am - 2 pm. A reminder that it is in Avda. Marquesat No. 53. Marquesat is the road that runs from the ‘back door’ of the Mercadona store on the Jaime I roundabout, continues past Super G, crosses C/Diana* - you will see Restaurant Pollo Loco ion the corner past the playground. After the next block, you will see a large pharmacy on the LH corner. The office is next to this.

* if you are coming by car, turn right here to park on the other side of the railway track.

‘PICADETES’

That is what the Valencianos call their typical ‘tapas’, and ‘members of Help of Denia’ along with people from other clubs and associations of ‘extranjeros’ in Denia were invited to sample these at various local restaurants.

Those of us who participated in this very generous invitation by the Mayoress and the Councillor for Culture were indeed very honoured to be given this opportunity to sample local food cooked by local chefs, and to get to know the Valenciano names so that we can ask for them in future.

And by the way, there is a scheme for those who are interested in learning Valenciano: you will be given the opportunity to learn on a one-to-one basis for a period of 6 weeks. Ask at the Ayuntamiento (or perhaps I should say ‘Ajuntament’) if you would like to join in this scheme.

‘CENSUS FORMS’

I have received exactly 40 responses (forms returned, e-mails and phone calls) since they were sent out with the last Newsletter. This lack of response is extremely disappointing, not to say very frustrating for me personally.
I organised this so that I could leave an up-dated list for my successor as Secretary, and also to save postage on sending out to those who no longer are interested in receiving correspondence.
Of course, it may be that those who have not returned the forms are no longer interested in ’Help of Denia’, but I need to know this for the reasons mentioned above.
On the other hand, I would like to thank all those who did return the forms - I very much appreciate this gesture of courtesy.
N.B. The form was not sent out to those who have become volunteers during the last year or two, so the above does not apply to our new members.

NEW SECRETARY NEEDED

At the Volunteers’ Meeting, I announced that I am going to resign at the next AGM and it would be very useful if a volunteer would come forward as soon as possible so that I can gradually hand over the reigns. I would of course give full support in the transition period.
